Peachtree String Quartet | Holocaust remembrance day concert

We proudly present Christopher Pulgram and his PEACHTREE STRING QUARTET in concert on Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, 2023. Christopher Pulgram, who is also the first violinist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, will perform works by Franz Schubert, Gideon Klein and Johannes Brahms with Yang-Yoon Kim (viola), Elizabeth Pridgen (piano) and Thomas Carpenter (cello).

Christopher Pulgram is the son of William Leopold Pulgram, who was an internationally renowned archictect and a music lover. William Leopold Pulgram was forced to flee Austria in 1939, ultimately settling in the U.S.

Gideon Klein was a talented young Czech composer who completed his last work, String Trio, while interned at Terezin (Theresienstadt) concentration camp in 1944. From Terezin he was sent to Auschwitz and later Fürstengrube, and was killed in January 1945. His works composed in Terezin were placed with a friend for safekeeping before his deportation to Auschwitz, and given to his sister after the war.

The music performance will be followed by a conversation between Johannes Aigner, Director of the ACF DC, and Christopher Pulgram. Event to conclude with a wine reception.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Christopher Pulgram, who is the founder and director of the Peachtree String Quartet, has been a first violinist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 1992, and has recorded extensively with the Orchestra. Since 2007, he has also been the concertmaster of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra. Mr. Pulgram graduated under the tutelage of Ruggiero Ricci from the University of Michigan’s School of Music, where he received the Norman F. Maier Distinguished Music Student Award. As winner of the Atlanta Pro-Mozart Society Competition, Mr. Pulgram attended the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, where he coached with Sandor Vegh.


Yang-Yoon Kim joined the Atlanta Symphony as a violist in April 2009. She has performed all over the world and has been a featured soloist for the Minsker Kammer Orchestra and the Kumho Chamber Music Society. Ms. Kim received her Bachelor of Music at Korean National University of Arts, and a Master of Music at Indiana University, where she studied with Atar Arad, Alan DeVeritch, and Stanley Ritchie. She is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma and Doctor of Music Performance at Indiana University.


Thomas Carpenter has been a cellist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for five years and has joined the Peachtree String Quartet shortly afterwards. Mr. Carpenter has participated in music festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the Grand Teton Music Festival and The New York String Orchestra Seminar. Originally from Charlottesville, Virginia, he completed his undergraduate degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Stephen Geber and completed his master’s degree with Norman Fischer at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.



Pianist Elizabeth Pridgen, who had her major orchestral debut with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robert Spano, will perform as guest musician of the Peachtree String Quartet. She was named Artistic Director of the Atlanta Chamber Players in 2014, is a Distinguished Artist and Piano Chair at the McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University and recently released three music albums. Ms. Pridgen received her Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School where she studied with Joseph Kalichstein and earned her bachelor's degree at the Peabody Conservatory of Music as a student of Ann Schein.
