Gottfried Salzmann: September 11, 2001 - One Man's View
In this group of watercolors, Gottfried Salzmann shares his personal vision and interpretation of the tragic events of six years ago. Some images are disturbing, some haunting and many are beautiful in an ethereal sort of way. Not all of the paintings were finished immediately in the months following 9/11; some were completed several years later as Salzmann continued to assimilate the impact of 9/11. At its core, the exhibition shows how one man witnessed and interpreted the visual impact of an experience that is burned into the world’s collective consciousness. Salzmann felt strongly that this body of work should be shown as a group here in the United States. As viewers, it is important that we understand the artist’s drive to document an event of such visceral importance. He wanted to embody in his work the essence of what happened so that we can all look back and remember the emotions of the moment. These works give us an occasion to reflect.
Gottfried Salzmann is one of Austria’s most renowned international artists. His works have been shown at the Albertina, Vienna, the Rupertinum and Museum Carolino Augusteum, Salzburg, Musée de la Seita, Paris, among many others.
