1938 - 2008: The "Anschluss" in the Rear Mirror - Austrian Historical Memories Between Debate and Transformation

Lecture by Oliver Rathkolb
Comments by Peter Black, Senior Historian, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Oliver Rathkolb, Professor of History at the University of Vienna, analyzes the changes in the Austrian debate on the causes and consequences of the National Socialist takeover of power in 1938. The methodological anchor will be interpretations of certain transformative periods during which such changes became apparent, as for example the years 1984-1988. Special emphasis will be devoted to the causes that turned Austrians into active collaborators of the Nazi regime as well as to the inter-generational debate among Holocaust survivors, emigrés, those who stayed, and their descendants.
