RICHARD BENEDUM TO DIRECT MOZART INSTITUTE IN 2010 FOR NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES Dr. Richard Benedum, professor emeritus of music at the University of Dayton (OH), and organist-choirmaster at Christ Church in Bradenton, has been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to direct an interdisciplinary Institute for school teachers, "Mozart’ Worlds," from June 21 to July 16, 2010. Twenty-five participating K-12 teachers will be chosen nationally as part of the Institute; each teacher will receive a stipend from the NEH for his/her participation. The Institute will be based in Vienna, Austria. This Institute will be one of about 25 sponsored by the NEH in 2010. Dr. Bruce Cole, former NEH chair, has called these seminars and institutes the “jewels in the crown” of the NEH’s Division of Education. The grant is for $199,876, and will pay for faculty and stipends for participants. Benedum has already received twelve grants for earlier seminars and institutes on the life and music of Mozart for the National Endowment for the Humanities, beginning in 1990; only two or three faculty members across the nation have directed more. He has also served as founder and conductor of the Dayton Bach Society for 28 years; and as chair of the Department of Music at the University of Dayton for 15 years. He is formerly a member of the Ohio Humanities Council, and is now retired and living in Sarasota, FL. Other Institute faculty include University of Dayton colleagues Dr. Marilyn Fischer (philosophy), Dr. R. Alan Kimbrough (English), Dr. Paul Morman (history) and Dr. Julane Rodgers (music). Also on the faculty will be Dr. Frederick Amrine (German) from the University of Michigan; Dr. Thomas Fröschl from the University of Vienna; Richard Fuller, forte-pianist from Vienna; and Dr. Christian Otto (history of architecture) from Cornell University. Application information will be available at www.udayton.edu/~nehinstitute2010 or by calling (937) 229-4229. Dr. Benedum is organist/choirmaster at Christ Church, Bradenton, and co-director of the Sarasota-Manatee Bach Festival. He was also named the “distinguished alumnus of the year” for 2009 by the University of Oregon School of Music.
