Dana Tai Soon Burgess (Washington):
Dana Tai Soon Burgess has created dances that freshly synthesize Eastern and Western aesthetics. He was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to an Irish-Scottish American father and a Korean American mother. He originally trained with Tim Wengerd and studied the Michio Ito technique. Diverse elements inspire his choreography: culturally specific dance forms, martial arts, the visual arts, and personal journeys to Asia, Latin America, South America, the Middle East and Europe. Mozart as Mason (World Premiere) Choreographed to Preludes and Fugues K404a which Mozart transcribed from J.S. Bach. This suite is a special suite of new dances inspired by Mozart as the arranger and are dedicated to his birthday celebration and the Austrian Embassy in Washington, DC. Images from the Ember (2006) Choreographed to an original score by Aaron Leitko is inspired by the recurrent theme of Love in a time of war. Burgess was inspired by the works of Marguerite Duras which deal specifically with the psychological trauma of war and its long lasting effects on the human spirit and psyche. This critically acclaimed work originally designed for full procinium will be especially beautiful in the intimate setting of the Austrian Embassy.
