Nazi propaganda cynically touted the ghetto Theresienstadt as a “model Jewish settlement” while in reality it was a collection center for deportations to ghettos and extermination camps in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. Roughly 33,000 died in Theresienstadt itself. Despite the terrible living conditions and the constant threat of deportation, Theresienstadt had a highly developed cultural life. Lieder composed at Theresienstadt by Pavel Haas, Karel Berman, Hans Krasa, Viktor Ullmann, Ilse Weber, Zikmund Schul and Gideon Klein will be featured in this recital.

Program:
Pavel Haas: Chinesische Lieder (Chinese Songs), op. 4 (1921)
Karel Berman: Reminiscences 1938-45, piano suite, part 1 – 8
Hans Krasa: Five Songs, op. 4 (1925)
Victor Ullmann: Der Mensch und sein Tag (Man and his Day) | Drei Lieder
    (Three Songs), op. 37
Ilse Weber: Gedicht (a poem)
Zikmund Schul: Die Nicht-Gewesenen
Gideon Klein: Drei Lieder (Three Songs)
